Chaos is scary. When faced with uncertainty and doom, our first reaction is to want to control. Imagine for a second, that we are still masters of the universe. And can, will whip our climate and other natural phenomena, into shape. Dammit!
Maybe now is the time, to stop deluding ourselves. Like the addicts that we are, shouldn’t we admit, finally, to our powerlessness. And embrace the reality that is being thrown at us. Oil, more and more elusive and out of our range. Food, no longer so abundant. Water, soon to become like gold. Bees refusing to pollinate. Angry mobs rising all over, because life is not fair.
I imagine a future when we will be in charge of our destiny, again. Until then, let us surrender, and let go of our addiction.
I found your site on google blog search and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. Just added your RSS feed to my feed reader. Look forward to reading more from you.

Dear La Marguerite,
Do you think the children will ask those in my not-so-great generation of elders, “When did you see the good scientific evidence of what everyone knew? Why did you not say anything, even though you did not know precisely what to do? How on Earth could you stand by, as if hysterically blind, willfully deaf and electively mute, and allow “…the greed….of a thousand little kings…” who arrogantly see and proclaim themselves “masters of the universe” to precipitate the destruction of life as we know it and God’s Creation in the early years of Century XXI?”
Always,
Steve
I don’t understand what you’re saying.
There are problems, yet to my extend of my knowledge, they’re all solvable. We just need to do it. The problem is mostly psychological.
Indeed, if we’re going to see people like you suddenly “admit their powerlessness” and “surrender”, and then stay like this forever, then this might tell us something new about human nature. My bet is that this is just a temporary state for you, and you’ll soon feel in charge again.
I think Hansen’s predictions are about as worse as it gets, and even this doesn’t derail me. Ok, now we’re at 385 ppm, and we need to go to 350 to be safe. I’m working on it, and so are many others.
Then let me clarify! I am relating to the addiction/recovery model, where first admitting that one is powerless vis a vis one’s addiction is one essential step. I firmly believe that people need to first recognize the extent of their addiction, and what a powerful hold that addiction has on them.
Karen, welcome to La Marguerite! Maybe you can share with us some of your insights regarding addiction/recovery model, and how those may apply here?
Ok in that way. Well I must admit I’ve been through very rough times regarding this.
I can highly recommend to listen to Irreplaceable by Beyoncé. It’s about independence for me.
You need to take everything as a metaphor.
Before one surrenders, one has to accept there is a problem. Perhaps many are not even at that point yet, no?
first they deny, and then they cry.
oh, how good the abandon
of our illusions
how light the detachment
how relieved the free
the powerless.
first they faint and then they try.
oh, how strong the return
of our passions.
That poem is truly beautiful.
Thank you, Nadine.
Nadine, yes, thanks once more for gracing this blog with the gift of your words.
