Quoted from article in yesterday’s New York Times: “We try to be strategic about doing the things where each unit of effort has the most impact”, said Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club. Mr. Pope notes that his group has stopped short of castigating people for driving S.U.V’s or building large homes, too. “We’ll encourage companies to make more efficient S.U.V’s, and we’ ll encourage consumers to buy them.,” he said, “but we do not find lecturing people about personal consumption choices to be effective.”
Yeap, lecturing, or being lectured about how to lead one’s life, does not work. We are all teenagers in that respect. I have had that conversation with Green Guru many times. It is more powerful, and a lot less irritating to others, to just lead by example. After a while, some will rub off eventually.
The Sierra Club is truly a gracious example of putting a sock in it and leading and walking the talk vs preaching. They are a client of the company I work for and have been using our non-toxic cleaning line for a very long time. I have since encouraged other like environments to follow their example – one is this amazing camp that my daughter attends or a local school district or restraunt even in my community. I hit a brick wall so often and don’t get it. What has someone say no to purchasing something that is completely non-toxic and biodegradable? That actually cleans and is inexpensive too? I like to take the stance that there are people like minded enough to want what I have to offer. Especially with the green churn these days. I also feel strongly that I should not have to crawl through glass to get a sale. And don’t. Yet a mother earth has to earn a living!! Truth be told – I would not make a good living selling just my green line – the turnaround on our one products is 4 years – uh yup it’s darn concentrated. I sell it because I believe in it. I just think others might believe in it too. Have I missed something??
