Last week, The Huffington Post took the bold step of adding HuffoPost Green, a new section, entirely devoted to ‘Green‘, to its site. Kudos to Arianna, for granting further legitimacy to the green movement.
Along the same line, I just sent a request to Technorati, asking them to please add a ‘Green‘ topic to their Blog Directory.
I don’t know about you, fellow green bloggers, but having such a Green Blogs category sure would make it easier to connect with each other. It would also improve our chances of being found by the crowds. I will keep you posted on Technorati’s response.
While I was at it, I also checked Google Blog Search. There, no real categories to help find one’s way. Since they are in Beta, maybe something for them to consider? I also sent them a request. We will see if they respond.
There are lots of general sites still missing a “green” or “environment” category. Judging by the popularity of articles in Digg’s environment category, they are disappointing a huge audience with this omission.
But someone has to tell them. Good you took up this task!
I don’t think Google Blog Search with ever add categories, since they’re only focused on search, not discovery.
For blog discovery, I have high expectations for Toluu. I’m http://www.toluu.com/meryn . I can send you an invite if you want to.
Toluu probably won’t get categories any time soon, but it would be great to explore fellow green bloggers’ subscriptions.
Very very good idea Marguerite.
Except one thing : I don’t like the term green as I prefer to it environment.
Green is a color and also the symbol of the ecologist movement. And well, the greens – at least here – aren’t popular and are most of the time seen as hippies with surrealistic ideas which don’t appeal to many people.
Albeit I am nearing 300 articles written on environmental issues, I don’t consider myself as green.
Anyway, hope Technorati will move and answer in a positive way to you query. And if the term green is adopted, I will but my humble blue site in the green ! 🙂
agreeing with Edouard, don’t like the term green for longlife online.
environmentalist, environment?. plain speak for subject.
words wear out fast in the attention of busy people.
we know of what color our thoughts are. others see it as the color of their worn out shag rug. or worse.
Thanks Nadine ! 😀
Agree with you, except that I am not green and have no green ideas.
Earth is blue seen from space, that’s something I am reminded each time I write on my blog. Arthur C Clarke said once that the planet should have been named Ocean… ^^
This is me, always looking to be apart from the others, even if they are like me, if they share my concerns…. damn fool I am.
On this, my fellow bloggers, I leave you and wish you a great week ahead ! 🙂
Nadine, Edouard, I do not disagree with you. I am just being practical, as despite all criticisms, green is still the most commonly accepted designation for what we are all talking about here . . .
Green is more about being trendy, while the topic of sustainability is what really matters. A shirt made of bamboo and coconut husk fibers is easily classified as green, but seeing as though I don’t see any local coconuts or bamboo here, certainly not a sustainable option. The other problem with green, is that it can be used for people. “They are green” can then sound derogatory. They are sustainable or they care about the environment does not.
I’ve also noticed a big lack of these categories all around. Especially news sites a few months ago when I was working on a project that needed those sorts of articles. I went to the Guardian because no American source had anything good.
Thanks Andy. Again, see my comment above. Sustainability is really what we all mean here. But ask the person in the street, and hardly anyone knows what that word means. Environment is more user friendly, and a good alternative for mainstream categories. Green, while far from being adequate, and subject to much co-optation from quite a few corporate ‘brownies’, is right now the word most likely to lure in the crowds.
Now I think of it deeply, I think green and environment point to different things. The first one is a property of something (a green product, a green lifestyle, a green mindset) and *directly* implies sustainability, the other is more about the world in general, mostly bad news: resource depletion, climate change, deforestation, pollution etc,
Personally, I like to read more about green stuff, then stuff about the environment. Most of the facts presented to me are completely non-actionable, whereas green things can give inspiration to directly incorporate into your life (or business) or keep searching for a better solution yourself.
Certainly the best thing would be two categories, with some blogs listed in both.
I think you are right in principle, but to make things simple, one category is probably best.
True, and one category is also less to ask for. (Although I think they should pay you for making such a good suggestion.)
Marguerite –
I agree with you about Technorati – but I’m sure you’re aware of Best Green Blogs. I check out their meta feed and follow them on Twitter.

Thanks Jason. Yes, Best Green Blogs is a great resource.
Hi Marguerite,
I saw your post a few days ago and looked into your request. Technorati does indeed have a “Green” sub-channel already where readers can find posts covering sustainability and other environmental issues at http://technorati.com/lifestyle/green/.
Turns out the reason this may have been missed is because the “Directory” page isn’t quite synched up yet with all the channels Technorati tracks, so I apologize that the “Green” section is harder to find than it ought to be! The engineering team assures me it’s on their agenda.
And in the meantime, in addition to checking out the sub-channel, another really good way to find like-minded blogs on “green” topics is simply to search for a “green” topic, and click on “blogs.” Here’s an example search I ran on the term “sustainability”: http://technorati.com/blogs/tag/sustainability. I think it gives some good results on well-ranked blogs focusing on “green” topics, including some I didn’t expect like http://triplepundit.com, which focuses on sustainable business, and http://hippyshopper.com, which covers environmentally-friendly consumerism.
Thanks so much for your feedback!
